WANDER + WONDER

What makes Siargao extraordinary isn’t its palm-fringed coastlines or perfect swells — it’s the spirit of the people who call it home. There’s a quiet warmth to Siargao, an easy, unguarded generosity that welcomes you in. Fishermen wave as you pass, café owners call you by name after a single visit, children grow up learning the tides before they can tell the time. Siargaoans carry a deep stewardship for their land and sea; that sense of guardianship is woven into daily life.
A certain rhythm comes from living in harmony with the ocean — a steady pulse that binds everyone together and draws dreamers from around the world. When Typhoon Odette devastated Siargao in 2021, that spirit of togetherness galvanised. Neighbours rebuilt neighbours’ homes, local businesses supported one another and the island was reborn through compassion and grit. This is the magic of Siargao: where kindness is currency and community is a way of life.
My cover photograph is a small reflection of that — three women moving forward together, with the same quiet strength that defines Siargao and the people who call it home. Ikit Agudo, Lea Dañdhea and Gigi Forcadilla (above), champion surfers who have made waves beyond the Philippine seas, are the perfect symbols of the island’s intrinsic grace and resilience, and of the natural beauty and strength it embodies.
Siargao is changing rapidly, facing another storm on the horizon — one born of irresponsible tourism and overdevelopment. Yet locals once again are banding together to protect the integrity and soul of their beloved island.
Armed with respect and openness, visitors will find that Siargao offers far more than sun-drenched sands and rolling waves. It’s a living, breathing symphony where the ocean and the people have long danced together — and where there’s still space for pause, humility, warmth and wonder.
