After more than 20 years shooting on a different brand’s DSLR platform, last year I made the big switch to Canon and the giant leap to the EOS R5 mirrorless system…and there’s clearly no going back!! Over the past number of months I’ve made many, many thousands of photographs using the Canon R5 and RF Trinity lenses and I wanted to share some of my favourite features of this amazing mirrorless camera system.
As a professional photographer, the most common question I’m asked is what lenses do I use? Most people are often surprised to learn that I only shoot with three lenses...
Without a doubt, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is the most versatile in my camera bag. I can seamlessly go from shooting wide-angle landscapes to capturing fine details to photographing travel, lifestyle and documentary imagery to making intimate portraits, all without having to change lenses. If I could only own one lens, this would be it.
Sometimes you need to get close. And then get even closer. That's why the next lens in my bag is the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8. I can use this telephoto zoom lens to photograph sports and adventure, nature and wildlife and even portraiture. And when shot wide open, the bokeh from this lens is simply beautiful.
The final lens in my bag is the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 ultra-wide angle zoom. This is my go-to lens for all my interior work. With edge-to-edge sharpness at every focal length, this lens is a must for all architecture and landscape photographers. And you can even get creative with wide-angle travel and lifestyle photography too!
This so-called “Holy Trinity” covers a lot of ground: from ultra-wide-angle (15mm) all the way to telephoto zoom (200mm) in just three lenses. Further, their consistent large f/2.8 apertures make them super flexible for all lighting conditions. That’s why these lenses are all I ever pack for any assignment, anywhere!
