We came to Kenya for the wildlife. That part delivered — cheetahs stretched out in the morning light, elephants moving through the afternoon dust, a leopard slipping quietly between trees as the day began to fall away. Out across the Laikipia Conservancy, the rhythm of safari settled in quickly. Early starts, long drives, that familiar sense of anticipation that builds with every turn of the road.
At &Beyond Suyian, the days found their own pace. But travelling as a family shifts the frame. Some moments were as big as you imagine — close encounters, long sightings, the scale of the landscape opening up in every direction. And then there were the quieter ones that sat alongside them. Tracks in the dirt. Insects moving through the grass. The small, constant details that would have been easy to miss if we were moving at our usual pace. Sebastian and Max didn’t separate those things — to them, it was all part of the same experience.
That balance is what stayed with us, and Suyian held space for both. There’s a level of care there that goes beyond comfort — an understanding of how to shape a stay without over-directing it. The boys weren’t just accommodated, they were included. Whether it was game drives that stretched on without ever feeling tiring, slow mornings watching the light move across the landscape, or time spent with members of the Samburu community, everything felt considered without ever feeling imposed. The days unfolded naturally, with a quiet sense of intention behind them.
There’s often a sense that travel like this belongs later — that you wait until kids are older, until they’ll remember it more clearly, until it’s easier to manage. But being there, watching how the boys experienced everything, it didn’t feel like something we should have postponed. And that’s what will stay with us: the feeling of having been there together, as a family.
Below is a selection of the work we created during our time at Suyian — a mix of short films and still frames that reflect how the experience unfolded for us as a family.
And for a deeper look, we were commissioned to document this experience more expansively in Signature Luxury Travel & Style and Holidays with Kids.
