As a way to have more of my work seen by the public, my 2016 New Year’s resolution was to broaden my creative horizons and submit some of my photography to international photography festivals and awards shows.
In doing so, I was fortunate enough to have my North Korea reportage exhibited at a number of festivals, from Lithuania to Singapore to New Zealand, as well as one of my mobile photographs awarded 2nd Place – People in the 2016 iPhone Photography Awards (IPPA).
Established in 2007, the iPhone Photography Awards is the longest running iPhone photography contest in the world. And with this being the 10th anniversary of the IPPA, I decided once again to submit some of my mobile photography for consideration in the 2017 competition.
This week I learned that my photographs, ‘Up in the Air’ (which I made a few years ago with my iPhone 5S while on an airplane high above the Himalayas of northern India) and ‘Food For Thought’ (which I captured with my iPhone 6S on the streets of Cairo) were awarded Honourable Mentions in the Landscape and People categories in this year’s competition, selected from thousands of entries submitted by iPhone photographers from 140 countries around the world.
I am also pleased that a selection of the winning iPhone images continues to be featured in international media across the globe, including TIME Magazine, The Guardian, Vanity Fair, DesignTAXI, dpreview, PetaPixel, Australian Photography and more.

I made this photograph of the snowcapped Himalayan Mountains out the airplane window as I flew from Delhi to Leh, the capital of Ladakh in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, for a documentary assignment. This was my first sighting of the mighty Himalaya and a tiny glimpse of what the next 10 days had in store for me.

I made this photograph of a man cooking in the square outside the historic Al-Sayeda Zainab Mosque, one of the largest temples in Cairo and among the most significant mosques in the history of Egypt.
